Taking the Challenge: 31 Days of Easy Decluttering/Day #1 - The Sock Drawer

A sure-fire way for me to feel overwhelmed and like my life is out of balance is to be surrounded by clutter!  It literally freaks me out!!  In fact, I'm actually taking a week's vacation from work in a few weeks for the sole purpose of getting my house the way I want it.  On the agenda:  Painting, purging, putting things on eBay to get rid of (and hanging out with my mom of course).  :)

Today, I came across this website (called "the Nester") in another blogger's post and decided this is perfect for what I'm trying to accomplish!  It's called "31 Days of Easy Decluttering".  Feel free to take this journey with me and we can share our experiences!  It sounds so easy the way this blogger has it broken down!

Day #1:  The Sock Drawer

(From Overwhelmed to Organized)

I'll be honest, I don't have a "sock drawer".  In fact, I don't even own a dresser!  Instead, I have these cute little totes from the Dollar Store (the woven one is from Target) in my closet:

Here's the "before" photo.  I basically had 3 groups:
1.  Light socks (dress and athletic)
2.  Dark socks (dress and athletic)
3.  Comfy socks/novelty socks (Christmas, etc.)

The steps according to the website are the following:
  • Throw out any socks with holes, as well as socks that are worn out, stretched, or stained.
  • Relocate socks that belong in another family member's sock drawer {it happens!}.
  • Relocate any other items that have crept into this drawer that aren't socks.
  • Give away or donate socks that don't fit you well.
  • Give away or donate socks you haven't worn in the last six months {except for a few of those warm fleecy or wool socks that you only wear in the winter!}.
  • Consider how often you do laundry and how many socks you need.  Then give away or donate socks that you have too many of.
  • Consider what types of socks you wear now (not what you used to wear or what you think you should wear) and give away or donate those you don't need. {For example, I recently cleaned out my sock drawer and found about a dozen pairs of pantyhose.  Since I rarely wear these anymore, I kept 2 and donated the rest.}
  • Think about how much space you have in your sock drawer and if you still have too many socks for your space then purge some more.  You want to be able to easily find what you're looking for when you're getting ready in the morning!

Here's the "after" photo:

The crates are no longer overflowing!!  The pile to the far left is being donated to AmVets, the middle pile with the pink sock on top is turning into cleaning rags, and the next pile over are socks that should be in my husband's crates.  Who-hoo!!  Day #1 is done!

If decluttering is something you need to do too, do this along with me!  Let me know your progress as I share mine with you.  :)

XOXO,
Stephanie
