FABLETICS Salar Capri Pants Review - May 2015 Subscription Box

What it is:  A monthly workout clothing subscription box co-founded by actress Kate Hudson.

Cost:  $49.95 and up for a whole outfit;  less to buy individual pieces

Details:  On the first of each month, Fabletics releases their new collection for the month.  You can buy one of the outfits they've put together as a whole or can select pieces individually from each outfit to create your own style.  You can pick out new outfits/pieces or select pieces from previous months that are still available.  You can also skip the month if you decide you don't see anything you like/want as long as you do so by the 5th of the month.  Subscription members (they call them VIP Members) also receive special additional clothing discounts when shopping the Fabletics website, as well as points for each purchase which can be used to get additional items from the website for free.  If you spend $49.95+, members also qualify for additional "Fit Finds" discounted prices on selected items.

What I Ordered:  This month I chose my pieces individually.  I chose the Breezy tank, the Astoria shrug, and pre-ordered the Salar Capri pants.

These Salar Capri Pants - VIP Price - $44.95 - were on back-order when I placed my original order.  They just arrived this past Friday.  As promised - here is my review of them:

The first thing that struck me is the vibrant color!  These pants feature beautiful shades of Caribbean blues and greens.  The next thing that stands out is the softness of the fabric.  The compression factor of the pants are great too!  They feel smoothing and really seem to hold my "wobbly bits" in place.  I would recommend these pants to everyone!!

As I mentioned in my original post, the photo above is the "Royal Palms" outfit Fabletics put together on their website.  I instantly fell in love with vibrant emerald color of the capri pants.  However, I decided I wasn't thrilled with the color/style of the tank that was paired with the pants.  The price for the tank shown above is $15.95.  So, I chose a different one from the site.

2.  Breezy Tank - VIP Price - $15.95 - This tank is from the "Bonita Springs" outfit shown above.  The color of the tank looks like it will go perfect with the capri pants!  The fabric is VERY soft and the color is vibrant!  The only thing I don't care for about this tank is the fact it really does ruche on the left hand side, which feels a bit odd on.  (I thought it was just doing that b/c of how the model had her arm, but it really is made like that).  The ruching is flattering though for hiding a muffin top, which is nice.  Overall, this tank is definitely worth the price!

The total price for this outfit was $60.90.  The quality of these pieces is very high and I should be able to wear them for many years to come, which makes it worth it to me.  Click on this link to get your first outfit for $25.00.  (Yes, $25.00)!!

Have you checked out Fabletics yet?  If so, what did you think?

XOXO,
Stephanie

Shaker Lemon Pie Recipe from CLUB W - Review

Just in case you missed my blog post from yesterday about Club W, I wanted to highlight the amazing Shaker Lemon Pie Recipe it included.  Click here to see the entire blog post.  This is the run-down of the pie recipe though.  It was so yummy, it deserves it's own post!

Club W sends recipe cards which feature flavorful meal pairings to go with each wine.  In this case, the recipe was for a shaker lemon pie.  I've never made a pie before and I love lemon, so I decided to give it a try.

The instructions for this pie were nice and easy!  You basically just slice 2 lemons and add them in with 2 c sugar and 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract.

The lemon acidity ends up dissolving the sugar.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and combine 4 beaten eggs in with the lemon mixture.

For the pie crust, I bought one from Kroger.  (This is the first pie I've ever made.  Maybe in the future I'll try to make my own pie crust, but for my first one, I went for simplicity).

Laid the pie crust out in the bottom of the plate and formed it.

Next, add the lemon mixture and bake pie in the center of the oven at 425 degrees for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, turn the oven down to 325 degrees and back for another 45 minutes (or until pie is set).

The final product:

This pie was a lot of fun to make!  I loved slicing the lemons and seeing how the lemon juice liquefied the sugar.  It was fun to arrange everything and to make the pie pretty.  And, it tasted really good too, especially with vanilla ice cream and the Lemon Squeezy wine!

Overall, I came to the conclusion I'm just not a wine aficionado.  However, this pie recipe made the entire experience worth it!  It was soooo good!

Have you checked out Club W or tried this recipe yet?  If so, what did you think?

XOXO,
Stephanie

CLUB W Subscription Box Review - May 2015

What it is:  A monthly personalized wine club

Cost:  $39/month for 3 bottles of wine + $6 shipping;  Free shipping when you order 6 bottles of wine/month or more.  ***Click here to get 50% off your first order of 3 bottles of wine.***

Details:  Each month, Club W makes recommendations for you based on your Palate Profile (you complete when you sign up).  Choose from Club W's suggestions or make your own suggestions from their ever-changing assortment of wines from around the world.

My Current Wine Knowledge Level:  Much like my cooking skills, my wine palate leaves a lot to be desired.  I like sweet white wines primarily, such as Moscoto or Chardonnay, or chilled red wines such as Lambrusco (my husband would be so embarrassed by my admitting that).  I figured I'd give Club W a try so I can expand my knowledge of wine and perhaps find some new favorites!

I was a little nervous about wine being shipped without breaking, but they were securely packaged.

My Selections for this Month:

1.  2014 Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy - Sauvignon Blanc - Marlborough, New Zealand - My Selection

The description from Club W of course sounds fabulous!  I love the cards they send describing the wines.  This wine in particular is what lead me to sign up for Club W.  I love lemon and had never tried a lemon-flavored wine before.  I expected this wine to be a bit sweeter than it was.  The lemon flavor takes a moment to really surface, but once it does, it's good.  I like this wine and am glad I tried it.  My husband enjoyed it too.

Club W also sends recipe cards which feature flavorful meal pairings to go with each wine.  In this case, the recipe was for a shaker lemon pie.  I've never made a pie before and I love lemon, so I decided to give it a try.

2.  2013 Tempo Vero - Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - Abruzzo, Italy - Club W Suggestion

This wine was advertised as being the red wine equivalent of "Italian comfort food", so I had high expectations for it.  It was absolutely AWFUL though!!  This wine tasted like drinking chemicals.  Even my husband (who LOVES red wine) wouldn't drink it after two sips.  I tried to get myself to finish my glass so I didn't waste it, but couldn't do it.  Down the sink it went!

The recipe pairing - Cinnamon Lamb Stew.  I'm not a fan of lamb, so this isn't a recipe I'll be making.  If any of you try it though, comment below and let me know how you like it.

3.  2013 Wayward - White Wine - California - My Selection

This wine tasted like most Chardonnays I've had before.  Yes, it smelled pretty and fruity, but in the end, it tasted like.... chardonnay.  It did give me a nice, warm fuzzy feeling after just a few sips, but other than that, it was unremarkable to me.  I wouldn't spend $13 on it in the store unfortunately.

The recipe pairing for this wine is Mac & Cheese with a Sneaky Veggie Puree.  I love mac and cheese, but the veggie puree ingredients were not appealing to me (specifically the turnips, cauliflower, and parsnips).  There's a lot of ingredients that go into this dish and a lot of steps to make it too.  Decided to pass on this dish.

VERDICT:  I am a white wine drinker while my husband prefers red.  I love that you're able to customize this box according to your preferences and that you can mix and match types of wine!  I also love the Palette Profile and all the questions it asked (preferences regarding sweetness, aromas, etc.).  I joined Club W for the sole fact of wanting to try the Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy wine, which was a hit.  Despite my dislike of the red wine, making the Shaker Lemon Pie recipe Club W sent made this experience worth it.  Check out their recipe pages (and sign up for their e-mails)!  They have a lot of amazing recipes posted that made me salivate as I was looking at them!  (I pinned over 25 of them).  Many of the pairing wines for these dishes sound good too.  In the future, I may look for some of them when I place my order.

Overall, I've come to the conclusion I'm just not a wine aficionado.  I'd love to be all fancy and talk about the legs of the wine and the oak-y notes, etc., but that's just not me.  I like sweet, flavored wines like Moscoto that really don't taste like alcohol.  In the future, I might order ones with a peach or strawberry flavor (or something along those lines), but otherwise, I can't see myself placing an order each month.  (It will probably take me another month to get thru these three bottles of wine).  I am excited to see what the selections are for next month though!

Have you checked out Club W yet?  If so, what did you think?

Stephanie

BIRCHBOX Limited Edition "Under the Sun" Box

Periodically,  Birchbox offers Limited Edition specially curated boxes, which are available for purchase in addition to their monthly $10 subscription box. The great part about this box is they show you what's in it (colors may vary slightly).  Overall though, you know what you're getting and if it's worth the price to you!  When I saw what this box contained, I had to have it!  (I was going to buy a bronzer anyway).

Cost:  $55.00  (I used coupon code "welcomeback20" to get 20% off, so I purchased this box for $44).  Who-hoo!!

**Also, if you spend $35, don't forget to add your free sample pack.**  You'll receive one deluxe and one standard sample of mystery items Birchbox is excited about right now.  (Just search "Mystery Sample Pack" on their website and add it to your cart prior to checkout.  Unfortunately, I forgot to add it to mine since it was my first time ordering from the site, but I'll make sure to next time).

The Products:
Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour (RV $24)
Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen (RV $12.40)
Cynthia Rowley Beauty on the Go Multi Blush & Bronzer Duo (RV $24)
NCLA Swim Club Nail Polish (RV $16)
Sugarpova Flirty Gummies (RV $5)
Knockaround Sunglasses (RV $14.60)
Baggu Bag (RV $9)
Chloe + Isabel Birchbox Exclusive Medina Convertible Pendant Necklace (RV $38)

RETAIL VALUE =  $143.00

The Breakdown:

Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen (RV $12.40) - I have a fair complexion, so I can never have enough sun screen!  This one is SPF 40, which is great for me!  For some reason I thought the tube they sent would be bigger than it was.  For $12.40, it seems pricey for the size you get.  I've heard it's a good brand though, so I'll definitely try it out.

NCLA Swim Club Nail Polish (RV $16) - I have a lot of nail polish already from my OPI obsession and my Julep Maven subscription, but surprisingly, not one this shade.  The color is called "Bikinis and Martinis".  It's a pretty pastel peach color.  It's very pretty for summer!

Baggu Bag (RV $9) - I received a Baggu Bag when I first signed up for the PopSugar Must Have box.  These bags are well-made and a great concept.  I just always forgot to bring them to the grocery store.  Maybe I'll stow this one in my purse though to save on shopping bags.  The elephant design is cute and if all else fails, I'll use it to take my lunch back and forth to work.

(These are the two versions of the Baggu bags for this box that were available).

Sugarpova Flirty Gummies (RV $5) - I am always down for candy!  I've heard this brand is yummy, so I was excited to try them and they were DELICIOUS!  I literally ate them while I was opening the make-up from this box.  :)

Cynthia Rowley Beauty on the Go Multi Blush & Bronzer Duo (RV $24) - As I mentioned above, I was looking for a good bronzer.  Cynthia Rowley is another quality name brand product that I've been wanting to try.  The colors appear really bold, but they go on smoothly and have a more subtle tint to them.  (I just need to practice a bit putting liquid blush on since I'm used to powder).

Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour (RV $24) - Laura Mercier is a really good brand of eyeshadow from what I've always heard and I've always wanted to try it.  The shade they sent is called "Cameo" (the shade on the left in the photo below).  It's a versatile matte tan color that makes a good base for layering shadows.  My only complaint is that I got a tan when I went to the beach a few weeks ago and the color pretty much blends in with my skin tone right now.  Once the tan fades though, it will show up more.  There were two shades options available they would send.  I would've preferred to receive the darker shade instead.

Knockaround Sunglasses (RV $14.60) - I literally have a little basket of sunglasses on my living room table.  I've been known to lose or break them though every few months, so I can always use another pair.  Plus, I like to match them with my outfits so I can use them as indoor headbands if my hair gets in my face!  The light charcoal color is really pretty and I love the orange tint on the lenses.  They're REALLY lightweight!  The only drawback is that they're so light weight, they seem a bit flimsy to me.  (I did wear them to run errands this morning though and they did good headband duty while I was in stores).  I'll definitely keep them in the little case they came in when I put these in my purse.

Last but not least - Chloe + Isabel Birchbox Exclusive Medina Convertible Pendant Necklace (RV $38) - I love the layered necklace look!  (As a former Lia Sophia consultant, I was taught to layer, layer, layer).  This necklace set along with the bronzer is what convinced me to order this box when I first saw what was in it.  I love this necklace in person!  It's a beautiful antique gold color and the turquoise colored stone is an eye catcher.  I'll definitely wear this a lot!

VERDICT:  To me, the value of this box was amazing!  I paid $44 for $143 of merchandise.  Most subscription boxes don't even come close to this value!  I will wear the necklace and sunglasses a lot!!  Loved the candy and the blush & bronzer set too!  The nail polish, eye shadow shade, and the Baggu bag didn't thrill me, but I'll still use them all.  I definitely feel like I got my money's worth in this box and am excited to see what future Limited Edition boxes they come out with!

What do you think?  Have you tried any of the Birchbox Limited Edition boxes before?

XOXO,
Stephanie

HELLO FRESH - Stuffed Peppers Review (My Version)

What it is:  A flexible subscription service delivering fresh food and recipes of your choosing to your doorstep

Cost:  $69/week for 3 meals for 2 people (or $129/week for 3 meals for 4 people) for the "carnivore" option.  $59/week for 3 vegetarian meals for 2 or $109/week for 3 vegetarian meals for 4 people.

Details:  Each week Hello Fresh chefs offer a new group of meals to choose from.  You select your meals and delivery date.  Hello Fresh ships the recipes and all the ingredients to your doorstep in insulated packaging to ensure freshness.

My current cooking skill level:  I consider ordering pizza or making a box of Shells & Cheese to be cooking.  I HATE cooking and think it's a complete waste of time!  I hate going to the grocery store, I'm a picky eater, and I have no creativity when it comes to planning meals.  My husband however is a great cook (especially when it comes to grilling)!  Since we got married many years ago, he's wanted me to cook, which is why I decided to try this subscription box.  I pick the meals and Hello Fresh sends everything to me.  Easy enough, right?  Welllllllll........

If you read my 5/23/15 blog post, you know this meal met an unfortunate fate the first time around.  I put everything in the freezer when it first came and then pulled it out last Sunday night and put it in the refrigerator so I could cook it Monday night.  I didn't end up cooking Monday night (or Tuesday for that matter) and by the time I was ready to cook this meal Wednesday night, everything veggie-wise had turned to mush!  Since I still had the ground beef left, I decided to go ahead and do my own version of this recipe.

Here is what the third meal from Hello Fresh was supposed to be:  Indian Stuffed Peppers with Curried Beef & Garam Marsala-scented Rice

Ingredients:  2 bell peppers, ground beef, onion, curry powder, garam marsala, a carrot, peas, Basmati rice, and parsley

My modified recipe:  2 red bell peppers, 1 green pepper, the original 1/2 lb of ground beef Hello Fresh sent, 1 lb mild Italian sausage, 1 TBSP onion flakes, 1 tsp curry powder, 1 carrot, 3/4 cup brown (Kroger brand) rice, and 1 tsp parsley

Time to Cook/Make Meal:  45 minutes

Difficulty Level (according to Hello Fresh):  1 (out of 3)

Cooking Instructions:

This time I prepared my veggies ahead of time since it still takes me forever to cut up vegetables.  Instead of buying a fresh onion and fresh parsley, I used 1 Tbsp of chopped onions and 1 tsp of parsley.  I combined that with 1 peeled/diced carrot and 1/2 of a green bell pepper that I chopped using my Kitchen Aid hand chopper.  As directed, I also added a bit of salt and pepper also and sat the mixture aside.

Next, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees and cut the two red bell peppers in half and drizzled each one with 1/2 TBS of olive oil.  I also seasoned them lightly with salt and pepper.

The vegetable step I did first would've occurred here.  Instead, I did the third step, which consisted of heating 1 TBS olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.  I added the ground beef, as well as 1 lb of mild Italian sausage and seasoned with salt & pepper.  I added the sausage for two reasons:  1.  I thought it would give the dish more flavor).

And 2.  I didn't think this little package of meat Hello Fresh (1/2 lb) would've been enough since I bought huge red bell peppers.

(It actually would've been enough.  Now I know to trust the portion sizes Hello Fresh sends).

I missed the part of the instructions where it said to set aside the meat mixture.  (That's how specific my instructions need to be - I need them to say "remove the meat mixture from the pan).  Instead I saw the part that said, "Add the onion and carrot to the same pan you cooked the beef in and season with salt and pepper".  So, this is what I did:

I combined the meat and veggie mixture I made earlier into the skillet and tossed it for about 5 minutes until the vegetables were softened.  Once the veggies were softened, I added 1 tsp of curry powder.  (This is where the garam marsala would've been added too, but I forgot to add it to the grocery list, so it didn't make it into the dish).  This is also where the instructions say to add in the rice and parsley (and I realized I messed up by putting everything in the skillet together earlier).  Oopsie!

I just realized I goofed up another step too.  While the sausage/hamburger mixture was browning, I added 3/4 c rice to a saucepan with 2 c of water.

I brought it to a boil, then reduced the temperature to simmer and let it cook for 15 minutes.  (This is the first time I've ever cooked rice, so in my defense, I had no idea how long rice is supposed to cook.  I was also trying to cook potato wedges at the same time (there will be a future RawSpiceBar post about them), which I had also never done before and chop up the rest of the green and red peppers to use in omelets tomorrow morning.

What was supposed to happen is that I should've added the 3/4 cup of rice and 2 cups of water to the veggie mixture and let it cook covered for 15 minutes until the rice was tender.  Instead, I drained the rice from the sauce pan and added it to the meat and veggie mixture.  (I'll post a picture of the correct instructions below so you can see how this dish is supposed to be made).

Next, I drained the meat/veggie/rice mixture and stuffed it into the peppers.  Put the peppers back in the oven and let them cook for about 5 minutes.  Here's the final product:

FINAL VERDICT:  As I said earlier, I am not a fan of cooking AT ALL!!  Even though the ingredients I used varied slightly from the original ones Hello Fresh sent, the concept was still the same.  I'm surprised with how bad I messed up following the instructions.  Despite me combining things out of order and cooking the rice 15 minutes too long, the dish still tasted really good though.  (And my husband enjoyed it).  In the end, I enjoyed making it.  Like I said in my previous blog post, making these Hello Fresh dishes feels as though I'm taking a cooking class in my kitchen.  Next time, I think I need to make one dish at a time instead of trying to make two dishes I've never tried to do before at the same time.  I'm also going to study the directions a few times prior to diving right in.  :)

As I mentioned in the 5/23/15 post, my next Hello Fresh box is set to arrive on 5/27/15.  I ordered the Smoky Adobo Chicken Tacos, Seared Provencal Steak, & Pan-Seared Pork Chops.

Have you tried Hello Fresh yet?  If so, what did you think?

XOXO,
Stephanie

Here are the correct instructions for making this dish:

And here's the tasty omelet I made the following morning with the left over stuffed pepper ingredients.  Yummy!!
